How to read your birth chart
Your birth chart — also called a natal chart — is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. It can look intimidating: a wheel full of symbols and lines. But it's built from just four layers, and once you know them, it reads like a map.
1. The planets — the energies
Each planet represents a kind of energy. The Sun is your core identity. The Moon is your emotional nature. Mercury is your mind and how you communicate. Venus is how you love and what you value. Mars is drive and action. Then Jupiter (growth), Saturn (structure), and the slower outer planets — Uranus, Neptune, Pluto — which colour whole generations.
2. The signs — the flavour
The zodiac sign a planet sits in describes how that energy expresses itself. Mars in Aries acts fast and direct; Mars in Libra acts through diplomacy and balance. Same drive, different style.
3. The houses — the arena
The chart is divided into twelve houses, and they describe where in life each energy plays out. The 1st house is the self; the 4th is home and family; the 7th is partnership; the 10th is career and public life — and so on around the wheel. A planet's house placement tells you which part of life it's most active in.
4. The aspects — the conversations
The aspects are the geometric angles between planets. They show how the energies interact — a trine flows easily, a square creates productive friction, an opposition asks for balance. The aspects are what turn a list of placements into a living, interconnected portrait.
Planets are what. Signs are how. Houses are where. Aspects are how they all talk to each other.
The one thing people get wrong
An accurate birth time matters more than most people expect. The houses and the Rising sign shift roughly every two hours, so a chart built on a guessed time — or on your sun sign alone — is missing most of the structure. If you know your birth time, use it; it changes everything.
